Hope this finds you having a wonderful start to 2012! We wanted to check in and introduce you to some of the SBAN members who are up for the prestigious Echoing Green Fellowship. We think you’ll like their ideas, so enjoy!

Meet SBAN’s 2012 Echoing Green Fellowship Applicants!
Every day and every moment brings us an opportunity to change the world. As SBAN members, we’re doing it in our classrooms, in our boardrooms, at our non-profit organizations and more. Several SBAN members have stepped up to spread their ideas about changing the world by applying for the 2012 Echoing Green Fellowship, and we’re proud to introduce you to some of them now! For over 20 years, Echoing Green has worked with some of the most promising emerging leaders in the nonprofit sector. Through their prestigious fellowship program, they have supported over 500 visionary individuals around the world in their efforts to create bold, ground breaking nonprofit organizations: new schools for low income students, advocacy organizations that speak truth to power, effective arts education programs, large-scale public service projects, health-care programs for the needy, innovative legal services programs for the marginalized, and many more. Meet some of the SBAN members applying for the Echoing Green Fellowship and learn about their ideas below! Christon Harris, Former Student and Teacher at Breakthrough New York
Christon’s idea is called Kickstand—an online platform that facilitates the transformation of socially driven ideas into sustainable, change inducing projects, connecting them with both human and financial capital. It offers those with socially-charged project ideas the ability to design a framework and flush out the details of a project using an intuitive web interface that suggests project specifications and special considerations based on responses to a series of questions. This platform also gives other change seekers the opportunity to volunteer and/or fund these ventures.

"Kickstand is about regular, everyday people generating extraordinary social impact through this innovative platform. This social engine will fundamentally change the landscape of fighting systemic ills, because it not only empowers ordinary individuals to be change agents, but it enhances our society’s collective reach in combating pervasive, deep-seated social issues through a more focused and localized effort.”
David Shepard, Former Teacher at Breakthrough New Orleans
David is co-founder of AppSuccess, which provides low-income students who are qualified to go to a four-year college with the means to get there. AppSuccess eliminates the college application information gap by matching applicants with mentors from top colleges who guide them through the college application and financial aid processes, for free, via an interactive online platform.

"After completing our commitment as middle school teachers through Teach For America, my co-founder and I observed that there were no college counselors or college guidance programs working with our former students in the high schools they attended. AppSuccess has the ability to reach every student for free, no matter where they are located in the country, as long as they have access to the internet. By helping low-income students get into college, we open the door to new opportunities that help them get out of poverty and improve their life options.”
Latia Miller, Former Teacher at Breakthrough New York
Latia’s idea is Healthy Picks, which advocates adolescents taking ownership over their health—and to have fun doing it! Healthy Picks’ mission is to provide these young adults with the tools and support to develop practical, dynamic strategies for healthy living. They do this by promoting their use of healthful resources through in-school workshops and a website that combines information sharing, social networking and online discount services. "The concept for Healthy Picks is in the tradition of benefiting from the experience of our elders. Today’s generation of adults is experiencing widespread effects of unbalanced, unhealthy lifestyles. Healthy Picks is harnessing the power of its regret to redirect the next generation onto a better path.”
Please wish these candidates luck as they propose their ideas for the 2012 Echoing Green Fellowship. The process will continue throughout the winter and into early spring, with the 2012 fellows to be announced in early June. Keep an eye out for future SBAN newsletters to find out the latest updates!
