First impressions
Attempting to make sense of a society so physically and recreational
based on an American standard compromises the foreign experience
considerably. As with any major change, premeditated analysis is beyond
senseless yet naturally inevitable. The faceless locals encountered and
initially deemed out of reach with respect to an ever-present language
barrier reveal London accents. First nights on the town more closely
resemble Bible belt bars than East Asian hangouts. As a first American
friend revealed to me early on however, this is a society that’s
largely been funded by “our” Western regime. Much to my chagrin,
American colonialism lives on.
I constantly run across imitation Starbucks (free wireless included,
thank god), Popeye’s chicken restaurants that offer char grilled
burgers (Cajun beef I’ll assume?) and 7/11’s with draft beer. Indeed,
I’m not in Kansas anymore.
