The Breakthrough Buzz
February 2014
As our programs expand, our staff is growing too. We are pleased to welcome the newest addition to the BTC team:
Ben Bauer will be the Site Director at Mounds Park Academy. Ben first experienced Breakthrough as a teaching fellow during the summers of '09 and '10 while studying at the College of St. Benedict/St. John's University. After graduating with a B.A. in English and a minor in Secondary Education, Ben joined the Teach For America 2011 Corps where he taught 7th grade English/Language Arts at KIPP Tulsa College Preparatory in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In his free time, Ben reads, runs, tries to improve his cooking skills, hangs out with his nieces and nephews, and wishes the Minnesota Twins would just call up their top prospects already.
2014 Teaching Fellows Recruitment remains open until February 25th. When recruiting aspiring teachers, Breakthrough Twin Cities looks for a diverse group of talented junior or seniors in high school and college undergraduates who demonstrate passion and talent for a subject they are studying in school and want to share this subject with middle school students. This unique Summer Teaching Fellowship offers individuals a chance to try teaching in highly supportive and professional environment. For more information or to apply, please visit our website or contact Ryan Kirk, Senior Program Director, at rkirk@breakthroughtwincities.org
Student Selection Committee:
Each year Breakthrough Twin Cities receives over 200 applications from sixth graders who are eager and excited to join BTC. In previous years our program capacity has allowed us to accept just 55 students from this large applicant pool, but with the expansion to a second site we will be able to select 80 students this year.
As you can imagine, the selection process is quite intense with the task of reviewing each individual application and ensuring that each student is given the time and consideration they deserve, so we do not try to take on this task alone. In true Breakthrough spirit we will use our code "relish hard work together” to complete the selection process. That is where we need you!
Each year we invite family, friends, community partners, teachers, volunteers, alumni teaching fellows, and anyone who has some time to volunteer to participate in our selection committee. Being a part of the selection committee will allow you the opportunity to review 10-12 student applications and then join us for our annual Selection Night, where we advocate for the students we hope to accept as the new class of BTC. Selection Night will be held on Wednesday March 12th, 2014. If you are interested in joining the 2014 Student Selection Committee, please save the date. Additional information regarding the Selection Committee task and responsibilities will be sent out in February. If you have questions or are excited to get your name on the list, please contact Catrice O’Neal at coneal@breakthroughtwincities.org. See you in the spring!

Teaching Fellow Selection Committee:
Join the 2014 BTC Teacher Selection Committee! This committee is key to the process that we utilize to select our teaching fellows for the middle school summer program. Applicants are invited to attend an interview event on March 4th or 5th at Mounds Park Academy, at which our Selection Committee members work in pairs with a room of students. Committee members observe sample lessons, evaluate applicants’ contributions to a team building exercise, and converse with applicants over dinner. Since we usually have over 100 applicants attend our interview nights, we rely heavily on the expertise and feedback of our Selection Committee members in making selection decisions.
To learn more about the Breakthrough Twin Cities Teaching Fellowship, visit our website.
If you are interested in being involved with our committee, the commitments are as follows:
  • Read & evaluate 8-10 teacher applications online between February 28th – March 3rd.
  • Attend one of our Interview Events on either March 4th or 5th (4:15PM - 8:45PM) at Mounds Park Academy.
  • Complete an evaluation rubric for each of the applicants, addressing their performance at each stage of the interview process.
  • Attend our Selection Night on March 6th (5:00PM - 8:00PM) at Mounds Park Academy.
If you would to join us or get more information, please contact Ashley Cooper at acooper@breakthroughtwincities.org. Please also include the night that works best with your schedule and/or if you are open to either date.
Plans are underway for the fourth annual Breakthrough Twin Cities Graduation Gala on Friday, May 9th, 2014 at Macalester College. This is an incredible night that recognizes the success of the Breakthrough class of 2014 while celebrating all of Breakthrough’s exciting future plans. Please join us! Sponsorship and ticket information will be available soon.
Breakthrough is featured in the most recent Saint Paul Sprockets newsletter. See it here!
