Volunteers founded SBAN, and SBAN will continue to thrive with the hands and hearts of new volunteers. Friends and alumni of Summerbridge and Breakthrough programs are welcomed to give their time to any of SBAN’s programs.
As Breakthrough Twin Cities enters into its 9th year we are proud to announce that the New Year will bring a New BTC Site. We are officially opening our second site in the summer of 2014, which will allow us to accept almost twice as many students who live in Saint Paul! The second BTC site will be located at St. Paul City School and we couldn’t be happier to begin the New Year with a new site and this new partnership.
As we expand our program, our staff is growing as well. We are pleased to welcome the newest addition to the BTC team, Demaya Walton, as our new Site Director. Demaya’s incredible qualifications include a B.A. in English from St. Olaf and an M.A. in education from Hamline. Her work at Hamline focused on providing under-resourced students with the tools to succeed in college. Her capstone project focused on helping 9-12 grade African American students prepare for success in higher education. Since graduation she has worked with Hmong International Academy, Laura Jeffrey Academy, and now Breakthrough Twin Cities. We are very excited to have Demaya as a part of the BTC family and we hope that you will join us in welcoming her to our team.
The time is here! BTC is recruiting both new students and teaching fellows for the 2014 program year. Recruitment season is a busy time at BTC, as staff is working hard to plan for new families, students, and teachers to join the BTC family.
Student Recruitment: We are looking for academically motivated sixth grade students from Saint Paul Public Schools who are excited about going to college. To apply, students must complete the rigorous application by February 6th, 2014. If you know a student who would be a great candidate for Breakthrough Twin Cities please contact Catrice O’Neal, Student Services Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit our website for application materials online. http://www.breakthroughtwincities.org/the-application.html
Teacher Recruitment: When recruiting aspiring teachers, Breakthrough Twin Cities looks for a diverse group of talented junior or seniors in high school and college undergraduates who demonstrate passion and talent for a subject they are studying in school and want to share this subject with middle school students. This unique Summer Teaching Fellowship offers individuals a chance to try teaching in highly supportive and professional environment. For more information or to apply, please visit our website or contact Ryan Kirk, Senior Program Director, at email@example.com
Each year Breakthrough Twin Cities receives over 200 applications from sixth graders who are eager and excited to join BTC. In previous years our program capacity has allowed us to accept just 55 students from this large applicant pool, but with the expansion to a second site we will be able to select 80 students this year.
As you can imagine, the selection process is quite intense with the task of reviewing each individual application and ensuring that each student is given the time and consideration they deserve, so we do not try to take on this task alone. In true Breakthrough spirit we will use our code "relish hard work together” to complete the selection process. That is where we need you!
Each year we invite family, friends, community partners, teachers, volunteers, alumni teaching fellows, and anyone who has some time to volunteer to participate in our selection committee. Being a part of the selection committee will allow you the opportunity to review 10-12 student applications and then join us for our annual Selection Night, where we advocate for the students we hope to accept as the new class of BTC.
Selection Night will be held on Wednesday March 12th, 2014. If you are interested in joining the 2014 Student Selection Committee, please save the date. Additional information regarding the Selection Committee task and responsibilities will be sent out in February. If you have questions or are excited to get your name on the list, please contact Catrice O’Neal at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please plan to join us for the fourth annual Breakthrough Twin Cities Graduation Gala on Friday, May 9th, 2013 at Macalester College. Help us to honor and recognize the success of the Breakthrough class of 2014 and celebrate the exciting plans for Breakthrough’s future. More details to follow!
