Volunteers founded SBAN, and SBAN will continue to thrive with the hands and hearts of new volunteers. Friends and alumni of Summerbridge and Breakthrough programs are welcomed to give their time to any of SBAN’s programs.
We are in the schools! Each month, Breakthrough staff visits each of the Saint Paul Public High Schools to meet with 9th – 12th grade students during after-school advisory sessions in order to stay connected with students between Saturday sessions. Since the program has started last January, students have explored non-cognitive skills, individual learning styles, ways in which the brain learns, and SMART goals. Students are also given opportunities to lead team-building activities or self-designed workshops, like the Commitment Box activity lead by Padah (BTC Class of 2015). Over 100 students have participated in the after-school sessions this year, with more meetings scheduled through the end of the school year.
On November 18th, Sarah Cameron joined the Breakthrough staff as the Community Engagement Specialist/Americorps VISTA. Originally from Denver, Sarah received her bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing from the University of St. Thomas in 2011.
Last year, she worked as a VISTA for the Helena School District in Montana, where she created academic programming at local schools and museums to engage students and families. During her year at Breakthrough, she will develop structures that will connect families and volunteers, dive into development work, and assist at Saturday sessions and the middle school summer program. Join us in welcoming Sarah to the Breakthrough team!
Please plan to join us for the fourth annual Breakthrough Twin Cities Graduation Gala on Friday, May 9th, 2013 at Macalester College. Help us to honor and recognize the success of the Breakthrough class of 2014 and celebrate the exciting plans for Breakthrough’s future. More details to follow!
Recruitment season is upon us! Breakthrough Twin Cities is seeking highly-motivated, college-bound sixth graders from the Saint Paul Public Schools who would be a great fit for a challenging, academically-rigorous, six-year program. Expanding beyond the Mounds Park Academy site for Summer 2014 means we are able to accept more students than ever before. To apply, students must complete an application (now available for download on the Breakthrough Twin Cities website) by February 6, 2014. Contact Catrice O’Neal, Students Services Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Help us spread the word!
If you are an outstanding high school or college student (or know of one!) who is thinking about teaching as a career, consider applying to teach at Breakthrough Twin Cities this summer! This intense, nine-week, paid fellowship is one of the most competitive experiences in the country. Receive intensive training, teach a course in math, science, English or social studies, collaborate with professional Instructional Coaches, and build meaningful relationships in a supportive environment. Visit the Breakthrough Collaborative website for the online application. The deadline is February 25, 2014, with interviews granted on a rolling basis. Get ready for a life-changing summer!
Breakthrough Twin Cities’ students and staff are grateful for everyone who donated on Give to the Max Day on November 14th!
Thank you to all our donors who supported us on "Give To The Max Day”. Despite technical difficulties on the GiveMN website, 75 donors rallied together to help us raise over $9,000 on this single day. We are grateful that you made us a priority on this important day! And, don't forget, donations are always welcome ... anytime ... on BTC's GiveMN.org page!
Kudos to the Hamline University Women’s Hockey Team for hosting a special campus tour with our middle school students!
