Volunteers founded SBAN, and SBAN will continue to thrive with the hands and hearts of new volunteers. Friends and alumni of Summerbridge and Breakthrough programs are welcomed to give their time to any of SBAN’s programs.
Six minutes. Just six minutes after we sent last month's SBAN e-newsletter, I received an email from the Executive Director of The Belk Foundation asking about one of the job applicants we featured. They have now been connected. This is exactly the kind of action that we at SBAN strive for―connecting members with members. Leaders Developing Leaders. What will happen after this newsletter? Meet some fascinating members below, and make your next great connection.
Members In The News
Former Summerbridge Pittsburgh founding director Jennifer Dulski has traveled quite a successful path since her time at the program, and is now president and COO of Change.org. "Teachers often say they learn more from their students than their students learn from them. That was certainly true in my case,” Dulski tells SBAN. "At Summerbridge Pittsburgh, my incredible students taught me to understand and leverage different learning styles, set high expectations, and embrace challenges and hard questions. After a fifteen-year career in the tech industry, including work at Yahoo!, Google and now Change.org, I still think back on my early years in teaching as absolutely essential in my path to becoming a good leader." Make sure to read her recently published LinkedIn article on "The Motivational Pie Chart.”

Breakthrough Cambridge Co-Founder Needs Research Assistant
One of the latest and greatest opportunities posted to the SBAN Career Center comes from SBAN member and Breakthrough Cambridge co-founder Dr. Angela Duckworth. She is looking for a full-time research assistant to join her at the University of Pennsylvania's Positive Psychology Center (click the Penn logo at left for more info). "As a former Breakthrough founder/director, I am MOST eager to recruit within the network of alumni,” Dr. Duckworth says. Also, watch a fascinating TED talk she gave titled "The Key To Success? Grit” which has received over 1.2 million views!
Michelle Obama Addresses Breakthrough Houston Students
Several lucky Breakthrough Houston students participated in a recent live webchat with First Lady Michelle Obama. Mrs. Obama spoke to teen ambassadors from that program about the importance of quality education and global citizenship. "The best advice she gave was that once you learn something, you shouldn't keep it to yourself,” Breakthrough student Samantha Santana told Culture Map Houston. "Share your knowledge so that the learning continues.” Visit the SBAN News Section for the latest on your former program, and view a selection of events from the SBAN Community Calendar below.
