Graduation Celebration!
On June 1st, Breakthrough students and families celebrated the successes of the Breakthrough 2013 senior class at the first ever Graduation Celebration. Our incredibly generous Social Venture Partner, Lube-Tech, along with A Catered Event, Al and Alma’s, Wendie Bame, Chris and Marin Bame, Kaylene Neilsen, Cydie Leary, Adam Sylvester, and a whole team of Lube-Tech volunteers, spent the day making our delicious lunch – deep fried turkey, slaw, potato salad, and more. We definitely ate well that day! Check out the event photos below.

Like past years, we had much to celebrate: 100% of our seniors graduated from high school in four years and are off to college this fall. Huge scholarships were awarded to these amazing students, including two Gates Millennium Scholarships, a Dell Scholarship, two MEP Scholarships, a Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship, and a Wallin Scholarship. We could not be prouder of them for all of their hard work and dedication! Click here for a list of students and the colleges they will attend.
The Students Are Coming! The Students Are Coming!

The aspiring teacher interns have arrived and are busy getting ready for the Breakthrough middle school students’ arrival on June 24th. This is easily the most exciting time of the Breakthrough year!

For the first time ever, three Breakthrough high school students will be filling the roles of Non-Teaching Interns, which gives them an opportunity to hone their student leadership skills by taking the lead on organizing Friday events, modeling non-cognitive skills for their younger peers, and assisting staff and aspiring teacher interns with the inner working of the Breakthrough summer program. The Breakthrough staff recently sat down with the NTI’s to find out what made them decide to apply for the internship. Read here to find out what they had to say.
Summer Visitors’ Days –
The best way to get to know the excitement and culture of Breakthrough is to spend a morning with us during one of our three summer Visitors’ Days. Please join us on July 10th, 17th or 23rd from 10:30am until 12:30pm at our host site Mounds Park Academy ( a map and directions). Questions and RSVPs should be directed to Colleen Rourke at or 651.748.5595.
A SHOUT OUT ... to our wonderful friends at Lube-Tech
